Thursday forecast: plenty of sunshine
by The Oregonian
Thursday December 04, 2008, 4:55 AM
Now here's something you don't see everyday in the forecast: sunshine.
According to the trusty meteorologists at the National Weather Service, we're in for plenty of it today. Today's daytime high will hit 51 degrees. Looks like Friday promises more of the same, which is nice since the weekend will be wet.
This morning, we turn to Metafilter for fun. They've dug up some gems to share, like this site featuring images of some sleepy folks and this helpful site that'll tell you just how many calories were in that beer you had with dinner.
And here's something you might find surprising: the humble, maligned fruitcake is the subject of a lot of songs. So in the spirit of the season, we bring you "The Fruitcake Song":

Forecast calls for snow in the Cascades
by Stuart Tomlinson, The Oregonian
Wednesday December 03, 2008, 9:42 PM
Oregon's snowpack is a paltry 15 percent of average for this time of year, but skiers, boarders and other winter recreationists shouldn't lose heart. It ain't over until the fat snowflakes fly.
That's something that could happen soon. Snow is forecast for the Cascades starting Sunday and lasting into next week.
"It's still early in the season, but we need some snow on yonder mountains," said Jon Lea, a hydrologist with the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service in Portland.

by The Oregonian
Wednesday December 03, 2008, 4:49 AM
Wednesday will shape up to be a pleasant winter day, but it'll take a while to get there. We'll kick things off with thick fog that's expected to hang around until late morning. Morning drizzle is possible, too. The mercury will tick up to the upper 40s. The week rounds out with lots of sunshine. Look for clear skies Thursday and Friday.
That morning foggy may gum up your morning commute, so check here for traffic updates.
Now for an appreciation. Odetta, the singer and Civil Rights legend, died this week. This morning's New York Times reports:
Her voice was an accompaniment to the black-and-white images of the freedom marchers who walked the roads of Alabama and Mississippi and the boulevards of Washington in the quest to end racial discrimination.Rosa Parks, the woman who started the boycott of segregated buses in Montgomery, Ala., was once asked which songs meant the most to her. She replied, "All of the songs Odetta sings."
Happy Wednesday.
Tuesday forecast: scattered showers possible
by The Oregonian
Tuesday December 02, 2008, 4:53 AM
Another typical winter day lies ahead: a little rain, a few clouds, some wind. Today's temperatures will climb into the lower 50s. Wish we had cheerier weather news for the rest of the week, but looks like more of the same is on the way. Sunshine will be scarce, though there's a chance of some Thursday.
Morning clouds expected to give way to afternoon rain
by The Oregonian
Monday December 01, 2008, 4:52 AM
December gets underway with a bit of classic winter weather. Think clouds and rain. And today we get both. Monday starts off cloudy. By afternoon, things may get wet in the Portland area. The daytime high will land in the mid 50s. Sunshine will be scarce the rest of the week with daytime temperatures hovering in the 50s.
If you've got a spare minute before heading out this morning, spend it here. The Oregonian's own Joseph Rose kicks off his commuting blog, Hard Drive, with musings about how we get around.
And if you've got a couple minutes to spare this morning, well, take our Monday Morning Quiz. Which director was born in New York on this date? Hint: Before he changed his name, he was Allan Stewart Konigsberg. Still don't know?
Maybe this will help: he directed this 1977 classic film starring Diane Keaton.
Happy Monday.
Oregon's Storm King reconsiders gale of 2007
by Stuart Tomlinson, The Oregonian
Sunday November 30, 2008, 9:01 PM
The Storm King was skeptical.
It was the first weekend of December 2007, and the National Weather Service office in Portland was tracking an offshore storm it believed would trigger its first-ever hurricane force wind warning.

Portland weather: fog, then some clouds
by The Oregonian
Friday November 28, 2008, 5:20 AM
Portland's weather forecast for Black Friday begins with fog, progresses to clouds and peaks with a high near 48. Saturday is looking pretty much the same. Might be a good time for some aerobic indoor, economy-boosting shopping.
Or deep thinking.
Which brings us to my deep thoughts.
