Shaw dominates Brother Martin
Shaw's run to next week's Catholic League championship game went right through the heart of the Brother Martin defense Saturday.
Led by Shaw's senior-laden offensive line, Eagles running backs Lawrence Breaud and Chris Current ran up the middle at Brother Martin early and often.
Breaud rushed for 157 yards and four touchdowns, and Current rushed for 79 yards to lead Shaw to a 40-7 victory against the Crusaders in a District 10-5A game at Joe Yenni Stadium.
Shaw (7-3, 3-0), which has a five-game winning streak, plays Rummel for the district championship Saturday at 2 p.m.
"At the beginning of the year, this was our goal," Shaw Coach Scott Bairnsfather said. "We've got to be happy where we are."
Shaw finished with 257 yards rushing.
"Our offensive line is one of the strong points for us," Bairnsfather said. "They obviously played pretty well today."
Shaw drove 75 yards on 13 plays for a touchdown on its first possession to take a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Andrew Starkey scored on a 1-yard sneak. Current rushed nine times for 64 yards on the drive and kept the drive going with a 4-yard run on fourth-and-1 at midfield.
The Eagles increased their lead to 13-0 when Breaud scored on a powerful 3-yard touchdown run up the middle with 10:19 remaining in the second quarter. Shaw's extra-point attempt by kicker Mike Ledet was blocked.
Shaw's five-play, 40-yard touchdown drive was the first of three consecutive scoring drives in the second quarter.
