Tour de Jefferson takes off Sunday
The Jefferson Chamber's Tour de Jefferson bicycle ride will be Sunday, starting at Bayou Segnette State Park, 7777 West Bank Expressway in Westwego. Check-in is from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., with the ride starting at 8:45 a.m.
Last year, more than 400 riders toured through 40 scenic miles of West Jefferson from Bayou Segnette to Lafitte and back. Even more riders are expected this year.
Riders can sign up for one of two categories: Leisure Rider, which runs 7.5 miles, or Seasoned Ride, at 45.5 miles. All riders must finish by 3:15 p.m. Helmets are required for all riders.
Advance registration costs are $25 for an adult and $8 for a child, and include a T-shirt. A group of 10 or more that completes advance registration together enjoys a 20 percent discount. Day-of-the event cost is $35 per adult and $12 per child.
Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks, including hanging signs along the route, putting up tents at the start and finish lines, handing out water and food, staffing rest stops and taking tickets. High school students who need community service hours are especially encouraged to volunteer.
To register or request information for the bike ride, go to the Tour de Jefferson Web site at www.tourdejefferson.org or call the Jefferson Chamber at 504.835.3880, ext. 12. Completed forms can be faxed to the Jefferson Chamber at 504.835.3828.
EZ Parker/New South Parking is sponsoring the ride.
