Wins Friday could give 3 teams early inside lead

    Staff writer

Three West Bank football teams could have an early inside track on their respective district championships with victories on Friday.

Karr (7-0, 2-0), ranked fourth in Class 4A, plays McDonogh 35 (3-4, 1-0) on Friday at Pan American Stadium at 3:30 p.m. in a game of the only undefeated teams in District 10-4A.

West Jefferson (4-3, 2-0) plays Ehret (2-5, 1-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Hoss Memtsas in a District 9-5A game.

The Karr-McDonogh 35 game is significant, because these are two of the top three preseason favorites in District 10-4A along with O.P. Walker (2-4, 0-1).

Karr defeated O.P. Walker 12-6 in double overtime on Oct. 9. Karr defeated Reed 38-0 last Saturday.

McDonogh 35 defeated Easton 30-19 in its district opener last Saturday.

If Karr wins, it will clinch a share of the 10-4A title and try to win the district title out right against Easton (3-4, 1-1) on Oct. 30.

If McDonogh 35 wins and O.P. Walker defeats Reed (0-7, 0-2) there could be four one-loss teams in the district. Easton plays host to East Jefferson in a non-district game on Saturday.

Karr and McDonogh 35 each enter the game with plenty of momentum.

McDonogh 35 is on a three-game winning streak after an 0-4 start.

Meanwhile, West Jefferson is the only undefeated team in District 9-5A.

The Buccaneers, Higgins and Ehret were the preseason favorites in the league.

West Jefferson defeated Higgins 14-8 on Oct. 9. Higgins (4-3, 1-1) defeated Ehret 28-6 last Friday. The other one-loss teams in the district are Bonnabel (1-6, 1-1) and Chalmette (4-3, 1-1).

If West Jefferson loses to Ehret, then it could create a log jam atop the district standings.

If West Jefferson defeats Ehret, then the Buccaneers will have defeated two of their top preseason contenders in the league. The Bucs close the season with games against Bonnabel and Chalmette....
