Slidell's beautification efforts paying off
The Keep Slidell Beautiful board of directors recently met to discuss the results of the fall citywide cleanup.
A total of 172 bags of litter was collected. That number is down from the 220 collected in the spring and even lower still than the 450-500 bags collected in each of the two cleanups last year.
According to Bill Mauser, executive director of Keep Slidell Beautiful, those figure indicate a 60 percent improvement in litter control in the city.
Mauser estimates that two-thirds of the volunteers worked on cleanup while the rest worked on beautification projects. The goal for next spring is to have half the volunteers working on beautification.
A special guest on hand at the meeting was Melanie Peck, affiliate services director of Keep Louisiana Beautiful.
She said Slidell is "famous all over the state for what you've been doing here."
According to Peck, each new affiliate is trained to model themselves after Keep Slidell Beautiful because of the way the group has been able to diversify, handle cleanup, beautification, volunteers and tree planting.
Keep Louisiana Beautiful awarded a $2,000 mini grant to its Slidell affiliate. The grant will help provide the city with cleanup supplies and educational pamphlets to distribute to subdivisions in Slidell.
Now that the city has gotten litter under control, the next step in the Keep Slidell Beautiful plan of action is to go into the neighborhoods and have them create green teams to keep up the medians and entrances to each neighborhood. The group's new education committee will be chaired by Margo Guillot, who was assistant superintendent over curriculum and instruction in St. Tammany Parish.
Guillot and Mike Cosse, supervisor of administration in St. Tammany, plan to meet with members of the PTA and representatives of area schools on Nov. 10 to promote curriculum programs educating children on litter prevention and beautification within schools. They are working with a $5,000 grant awarded to them from Keep Louisiana Beautiful. Mauser, along with the rest of the board attribute the success of Keep Slidell Beautiful to the many businesses, civic groups, and volunteers who donate their time and money to improve the quality of life for everyone in Slidell....
