    BLESSING OF THE GRAVES

In most parts of the United States, holy days of obligation are observed with a simple church service. But in Louisiana, All Saints' Day has long been an annual event in which family members gather to clean grave sites, and to affirm their connection to those buried within them. The tradition harks back to the days when Christians in Europe paid respects to their deceased in the catacombs, carrying candles to illuminate the way.

The Rev. John Arnone, pastor of both St. Bernard Catholic and Our Lady of Lourdes churches, officiated over two Masses to celebrate All Saints' Day, along with All Hallows Eve.

On Saturday, a candlelight All Hallows Eve Mass was held at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, and on Sunday, an All Saints Day Mass was held in St. Bernard Catholic Church, followed by the annual blessing of the graves at the cemetery.
