Some veterans to honor this Nov. 11
Doug Miltz of Arabi has served as a staff sergeant in the Air Force for 12 years. He was a paralegal and a court reporter and was stationed in Saigon, Vietnam, from 1970 to 1971. He also did stints in San Antonio, Texas and Biloxi, Miss.
"My first memory is that when I got to Saigon, I had 24 hours to unpack before I got in a helicopter and began traveling all over Vietnam. I was really impressed with the French influence on the restaurants and all of the pastries there. The food was unbelievable. I also remember that the people there were a beautiful people -- they had a great spirit and were very giving."
Frank Benfiglio of Chalmette is a Vietnam veteran who served in the Army medical corps for six years.
"I was stationed on Long Binh, which was in the Mekong Delta about 11 miles from Saigon. I saw a lot of pain and suffering. It was basically the Vietnam version of 'Mash' with the serious side and not the humor."
Bill Whitney of Chalmette, a Vietnam and Gulf War veteran, retired from the Marines in 2003 after 30 years of service.
"I've been all over the world and have served in many countries and conflicts, and supporting our freedom and seeing those differences in other countries gives me a true appreciation of what it means to be an American and a Marine serving our country."
Earl Lafont, a former long-time resident of Arabi, served in the Coast Guard from 1942to 1945 during World War II, and then again from 1962to 1977. He currently serves as a colonel and special projects officer for the Louisiana State Guard and as chaplain for the Veterans of Foreign War Post 3798.
"I'm a flag waver. It's just like some men like to play golf, some men like to bowl, some men will go crazy for fishing; they like different things. Me, I love the military."
Michael A. Fernandez recently graduated from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps Leader's Training Course in Fort Knox, Ky. The four-week course is a leadership internship for cadets with the ultimate goal of becoming an Army officer. Fernandez, a 2007 graduate of Holy Cross High School, is a student at Louisiana State University. He is the son of Cheryl and Michael Fernandez of Chalmette.
