    Community Center wins grant

    The Community Center of St. Bernard in Arabi is one of more than 40 organizations nationwide to receive a capacity building award from the University of Massachusetts Boston's Transmission Project.

    The grant comes in the form of Digital Arts Service Corps members -individuals who have dedicated a year of their lives to work with organizations to amplify the power of public media.

    The Transmission Project fulfills its mission by supporting a diverse network of partner organizations that provide services to benefit communities nationwide.

    "I wanted to do something service-related in the New Orleans area, related to disaster recovery, and St. Bernard is definitely that," said Bill Brown, a Corps member assigned to the Community Center. "St. Bernard was 100 percent flooded, with 93 percent of the houses rated by the government as 'severely damaged' or 'destroyed.' "

    Brown was assigned to the Community Center for one year to help with their social networking presence.

    "The Community Center of St. Bernard is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering the survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita by providing them with local access to the essential recovery resources they need to rebuild their lives and their communities," said Iray Nabatoff, the center's executive director. "Free services available at the Community Center include hot meals, food pantry, clothing bank, Internet computers and more."

    In other Community Center news, low-income senior citizens ages 60 and older can now sign up at the center to receive free monthly food supplies through the Food For Families Program.

    Participating seniors will receive a food box on the third Friday of every month. The contents of the food boxes may vary from month to month, but will usually include items like evaporated milk or dry milk, juice, cereal, canned meat, canned fruits and vegetables, potatoes or rice or pasta, peanut butter or dried beans and cheese. To enroll in the program, seniors must provide proof of their birth date, proof of a Louisiana address, and proof of income....
