SACRED TIES
FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH: 433 Erlanger St., Slidell.
Prayer Shawl blessing: First United Methodist Church in Slidell was recently the site of the "Blessing of the Shawls," with 66 shawls draped over the communion rails for the blessing. Women at the church knit or crochet the shawls or lap robes to be given as a sign of love and to comfort someone who is going through trying times such as illness or the death of a loved one. During the creation of the shawl, prayers and blessings are offered for whoever will be the recipient. Shawls made in churches around the country were given to many at the Slidell church following Hurricane Katrina. To see about a shawl for someone going through difficulty, contact the church office at 643.6437.
General information: Sunday worship service is at 8:30, 9:45 and 11 a.m. For information, call 985.643.6437 or visit www.firstumcslidell.org.
Future: Several churches in the community will come together to worship and give thanks at the Community-Wide Thanksgiving Service to be held in the sanctuary on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. The Advent season will be celebrated with the traditional Hanging of the Greens on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
Community outreach: A United Methodist Men's Prayer Breakfast will be held today at 7 p.m. A Quiet Strength Men's Bible Study is today at noon. The youth ministry will be selling salsa today for $5 a jar with proceeds to be given to the Louisiana Methodist Children's Home and the Youth Trip Fund.
