Orleans after-school programs may qualify for 3-year grants
The Developmental Studies Center, a nonprofit organization based in California, is seeking proposals from after-school sites in New Orleans, Tampa, Atlanta and San Antonio who can benefit from a three-year $2.4 million grant from the New York Life Foundation.
The New York Life After-School pilot program, which began in 2007 and was financed through a separate grant from the New York Life Foundation, is in its second phase of expansion. The grant brings high-quality, low-cost literacy and math curricula to tens of thousands of disadvantaged school-age children by providing AfterSchool KidzLit and After-School KidzMath materials at a significantly reduced cost and complimentary training to administrators.
Thirty after-school sites chosen will receive 50 percent discounts towards the cost of AfterSchool KidzLit and/or AfterSchool KidzMath materials. All other applicants will receive a 20 percent discount.
The grant also provides participating programs with free professional development workshops.
Introductory and follow-up workshops will be conducted in each city for up to three staff members from each site. After-school providers that adopt AfterSchool KidzLit and/or AfterSchool KidzMath at 10 or more sites also will receive workshops specifically tailored to their organizations' needs.
Applications will be accepted online only until Jan. 29. Participating sites will be notified by Feb. 19. For information, visit www.devstu.org/nylife/index.html on the Web.
