  • Celebration Church in Metairie has reason to celebrate

Chris Russo of Metairie will never forget that first day 13 years ago when he visited Celebration Church.

"I was going through a horrendous divorce - I was a broken man," Russo recalled. "When I first walked into the church, I was invited to a men's Bible study class. And the men in the class began encouraging and supporting me."

The Bible class and other ministries of the church became a lifeline for Russo, and today he says, "The church literally became like a family to me."

Russo and other members of Celebration Church will gather this weekend to celebrate the church's 20th anniversary at 2701 Transcontinental Drive in Metairie as well as the church campuses located in both Arabi and LaPlace.

"We are going to celebrate the great things God has done in the past 20 years," said the Rev. Dennis Watson, founding pastor.

Special anniversary services will be held at the Metairie campus Saturday at 5 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. On Sunday, services are planned for 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

Services at the LaPlace campus, 3400 New Highway 51, will be held Sunday at 10 a.m. And at the St. Bernard campus, 7500 W. Judge Perez Drive, Arabi, services will be held on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Celebration Church organized two decades ago when a small group of people began meeting in a home for prayer and Bible study. They soon moved to the John Curtis Christian School gymnasium in River Ridge to hold worship services.

Watson was named pastor in November 1989.
