Senior volunteers honored at luncheon
Members of the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, which is under the umbrella of the Volunteers of America, were treated to a luncheon in their honor at Vintage Court on Sept. 26.
Outgoing Director Elizabeth Zornman thanked the volunteers for the thousands of hours that they gave to the community. She gave to John Tobin, director of Social Services for St. Tammany Parish, a check representing the amount of the value of the volunteers' hours that were contributed to the parish in the past year. Translated to dollars, the total was $946,731.
Incoming Director Maureen O'Brien praised the "wonderful organization with a special group of people. I am looking forward to meeting and to knowing you."
Director of Northshore Services Ty Bartel spoke of the impact that the volunteers have on the community.
Chaplain Bud Snowden noted the gloomy weather outside, and said, "Your beautiful smiling faces light up this room."
Plates were piled high at a buffet filled with delicious food, then calories were burned off with spirited dancing to the music of The Lucky Dogs with Mike Artell and Ronny Richoux.
The volunteers were given gifts of a pen and letter opener set, pillbox, coffee mug, calculator and a second-line handkerchief.
