La. 1088 work may begin next week
Construction is about to start on an interchange that will link Interstate 12 and Louisiana 1088 northeast of Mandeville.
The state Department of Transportation and Development has notified Barriere Construction Co. of Mandeville that it can begin work on the project next week.
Barriere was awarded a $12.17 million contract last month to construct the interchange.
The interchange has long been requested by Mandeville area residents and St. Tammany Parish officials.
Louisiana 1088 carries a large volume of traffic into and out of the Mandeville area, but it crosses Interstate 12 via an overpass that does provide any access. Motorists on I-12 who are driving to Louisiana 1088 or any of the schools or subdivisions located along it are forced to exit at Louisiana 59 and drive south -- usually through heavy traffic -- for almost three miles to reach the southern end of 1088.
The lack of an interstate interchange became more critical in August when the St. Tammany Parish School Board opened Lakeshore High School to serve parts of the Mandeville, Lacombe and Abita Springs areas.
