N.O. police officer hurt in crash dies
A veteran New Orleans police officer died this week from complications of injuries he suffered in an off-duty motorcycle crash about 10 days earlier.
Abreace Daniel, 44, of New Orleans, died on Monday, a Police Department spokeswoman confirmed Thursday.
Daniel was critically injured when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a vehicle in eastern New Orleans, officer Jonette Williams said.
Daniel, a father of three, was off-duty and on his personal motorcycle.
He was traveling on Crowder Boulevard at night and his bike collided with a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old man, Williams said. No citations were issued and the accident is currently under investigation, Williams said.
Daniel had worked in several capacities as a police officer, including stints in the 1st and 7th districts.
He was spotlighted in a 2003 Times-Picayune article that detailed his fight to clear his name following two rape arrests by the NOPD.
He was eventually exonerated in both cases. He had spent weeks in jail, held on a high bond, and wasn't released until DNA evidence cleared him.
Services will be held today at 1 p.m. at DW Rhodes Chapel, 3933 Washington Ave., followed by interment at St. Louis Cemetery No. 3.
