Forgetting the past
Re: "Voyage of the Nydia," Metro, Nov 1.
Lately my alma mater seems willing to sweep under a historical rug those issues with which it chooses to dishonor its past.
Truly, Scott Cowen at the tiller of Tulane's ship for 10 or more years deserves the praises heaped upon him for his actions in rescuing the university from the rough waters of Katrina. However, the recent article concerning Tulane's failure to live up to its commitment for preservation of a generous alum's treasured sailboat the "Nydia" is an embarrassment to all alumni.
The ongoing litigation over the perpetuation of Newcomb College's heritage is another example. Yet these concerning failures in commitment are not the most glaring to the public eye. The absence of commitment to athletic success is -- particularly in football, which has been a part of university life for over 100 years.
While Tulane languishes, other universities, such as Duke, North Carolina, Stanford and Northwestern, just to name a few are now showing promise in football too.
A recent fund-raising drive was titled "Promise and Distinction." Alumni made their contributions to reach those goals. Now is the time to deliver both academics and athletics to positions of promise and distinction.
The two are not mutually exclusive.
