Restore the VA hospital
The Federal Building next to the U. S. Post Office on Loyola was rehabilitated after its once-flooded basement was restored. I believe if RMJM Hillier, an internationally respected architectural firm, inspected the current VA Hospital on Perdido Street, it would stipulate that it, too, is structurally sound and viable for reuse as a hospital once the basement and power restoration was completed.
This VA Hospital facility already has an eight-story parking lot off Perdido Street with floors 9 and 10 now being used as a medical clinic. The cost to make this building state of the art, when considering the previous investments already made by the federal government in the past to improve and modernize its condition, would be considerably cheaper than building a brand new VA Hospital in the vicinity of Tulane Avenue.
And, if anyone is interested in the truth, veterans who use the VA Hospital did not want it built in downtown New Orleans to begin with. Veterans wanted the new VA Hospital next to Ochsner Medical Center in Jefferson Parish, where parking would be plentiful. Also, that location is next to another teaching hospital.
