Shangri-La is the only krewe to boast an Asian-inspired moniker, floats and costumes and is one of few krewes named for a place rather than a god or person.

Originally founded in 1973 as an all-female krewe in St. Bernard, Shangri-La move to the New Orleans Uptown route in 2000 as a krewe of 'festive ladies and invited gentlemen.'
