What I typically do is get a little oil, either some ham, ham hocks(I score them with a knife), smoke sausage or salt meat.
I put enough oil to brown the meat and add onions. Amount is about 1/4 cup or to your liking. Sometimes I put a few capfulls of liquid smoke (not a lot, be careful with this stuff)... "
