Po-Boy Festival expands to meet the demands of po-boy lovers

If you went to the first New Orleans Po-Boy Preservation Festival last year on Oak Street, you witnessed the rapid depletion of food, fest T-shirts and artists' wares -- and the human gridlock when 10,000 people jammed into three blocks.

Does New Orleans want or need a Fringe Festival?
Judging by attendance and the enthusiasm of audiences at the more than 40 attractions and 100 performances of the first New Orleans Fringe Festival, in the French Quarter, Marigny and Bywater, the answer would seem to be "yes!"

Last year's popular "Po-Boy Fest" returns Saturday, November 23 and features a lineup of the Big Easy's best sandwich makers that is second to none.
The 2008 installment of the festival will feature two stages with live music, arts and crafts by 60 of New Orleans' best-known artists offering unique artwork, a silent auction, a children's section with games and prizes, a po-boy photo booth, panel discussions covering the history of the po-boy and, of course, the best tasting po-boys in New Orleans.

Willie ClaytonGREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - Some of the Delta's most popular blues artists are scheduled to perform at the second Mississippi Blues Fest in March.
Willie Clayton, T.K. Soul, Vick Allen and J. Blackfoot will be featured at the Leflore County Civic Center Saturday, March 7, 2009.

Irene Bedard, actress and musician who was the physical model and voice for Disney's "Pocahantas," is a featured entertainer at the LIHA Fall Powwow in Gonzales, Louisiana, on Nov. 29-30The family-friendly event features intertribal dancers, craftsmen and other participants from regional tribal heritages - such as Houma, Choctaw, Alabama-Coushatta - as well as from areas across the nation.
Native American celebrities - such as award-winning actress Irene Bedard, the voice and model for Disney's "Pocahantas," and artist Dana Tiger - will be on hand to meet visitors and share their work.
According to the Louisiana Indian Heritage Association, a powwow is a family reunion, revival and cultural festival, showcasing Native American music, dancing, singing, storytelling, authentic crafts and food, including Indian Fry Bread.

A leafcutter ant carries a bit of green up a tree branch to its home at the Insectarium, where the plant material will be used to grow the fungus that the ants eat.
The National Recycling Coalition, Green Project and Audubon Nature Institute are teaming up on Saturday to show New Orleanians how much fun recycling can be.
"Everywhere you go, you hear about being green and helping the earth, but for years the animals have done their part," said Meghan Calhoun, manager of volunteers for the Audubon Insectarium. "Now, it's time for us humans to get on the bandwagon."

The Louisiana chapter of the Train Collectors Association's Model Train Show, featuring active train layouts, children's contests and model-train dealers, is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the VFW Post at 3314 Richland St. in Metairie.
