Bassist Robert Trujillo on the meaning of life in Metallica
by Keith Spera, Music writer, The Times-Picayune
Tuesday December 02, 2008, 6:20 PM
Editor's note: Listen to Keith Spera's interview with Robert Trujillo of Metallica on NOLA Radio .
Metallica is, from left, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo and James Hetfield.Los Angeles native Robert Trujillo tasted success as the bassist in punk-funk pioneers Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Osbourne's band. But in 2003, he successfully auditioned to replace Jason Newsted in Metallica, a process chronicled in the warts-and-all documentary "Some Kind of Monster," and immediately found himself elevated to rock's stratosphere.
Trujillo and producer Rick Rubin played crucial roles in the creation of "Death Magnetic," Metallica's most vital album since the untitled "Black Album" in 1991. Trujillo called recently from a Metallica tour stop in Portland.

James HallEditor's note: Hear selected tracks from James Hall's Pleasure Club release Here comes the Trick.
James Hall can be intense. At times, too much so.
By the singer's own admission, over-thinking, over-analyzing and overbearing bedeviled his ill-fated 1990s tenure with Geffen Records -- a rare example of a local rocker getting a shot at the major leagues -- and contributed to the dissolution of his formidable post-Geffen band, Pleasure Club.

Andrei CodrescuJEALOUS WITNESS: POEMS
By Andrei Codrescu (Coffee House Press, $19.95)
Don't miss this fine collection, which comes accompanied by a CD of performances by the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars, featuring special guests such as Harry Shearer and John Boutte. That spooky, mystical klezmer music is perfect for these poems, such acerbic and witty portraits of post-Katrina life. Codrescu is marvelously situated to appreciate loss of home, and oh, the ironies! In "Looting wal-mart," he recalls "how quickly they forgot how they didn't want a Wal-mart here, but now that they've looted wal-mart, we want the national guard here."
There are poems on other themes as well. In the section called "Some Poets," Codrescu honors his forebears -- Tolstoy, Tristan Tzara, Anne Waldman and Allen Ginsberg among them. Always witty and wise, Codrescu writes poetry that is authentic and wonderful. His voice is so familiar, yet he always has something new to say.AUTHOR! AUTHOR!
• What: Andrei Codrescu reads from "Jealous Witness."
• When and where: Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. at Faulkner House Books, 624 Pirate Alley, 504.524.2940; and Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. at Octavia Books (appearing in performance with the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars), 513 Octavia St., 504.899.7323.
Bobby Lounge releases Somethin's Wrong
by Keith Marszalek, NOLA.com
Friday August 22, 2008, 12:34 AM
Bobby Lounge performs Aug. 23 at the House of Blues. Bobby enjoys writing songs about the south and about people with robust lifestyles. He chooses to avoid the limelight when not performing on stage. However, on stage, Lounge is a energetic entertainer in the tradition of Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis. His song writing style has been described as "Randy Newman with bite." Some songs are not appropriate for children.
Lounge was born in the deep south in 1950. He learned to play piano before his early teens and was influenced by southern gospel, blues, and barrelhouse piano players.
